2012 BMW M3 Coupe Sports Car Review
The optimised aerodynamics in the 2013 BMW M3 Coupe ensures that downforce is both cooled and increased at the same time. The left opening near the powerdome channels additional air to the intake air plenum. The M rear apron with diffuser ensures controlled airflow along the car’s underbody. And the M front air dam with integrated air inlets cools the engine. The result? Added downforce for added thrills. With a vehicle as powerful and dynamic as this, styling is never an aim in itself. Form will always be driven by functional considerations. The expressive front is designed to accommodate the V8 high-rev engine. The muscular rear allows for the wider track and four tailpipes. Even the shape of the exterior mirrors adds to the overall aerodynamics. Only the interplay of all these measures ensures the desired effect: sports car performance that is ideally suited to everyday driving.
Combining racing technology with everyday usability, the V8 high-rev engine is full of 2013 BMW M3 Coupe personality. Every component has been carefully optimised to result in this impressive set of figures: maximum output of up to 8,300 rpm, 309 kW (420 hp) and top torque of 400 Nm at 3,900 rpm. And that's not all, individual throttle butterflies, normally only found in race cars, allow for faster response and additional performance benefits - an absolute engineering highlight for a road car engine. The BMW M3 Coupe offers ultra-fast, ultra-precise shifts every time. Its six-speed manual gearbox ensures optimum transmission of engine power throughout the rev range, resulting in smooth acceleration on demand. Even downshifts are a pleasure - especially when followed by a bend. A redesigned, more lightweight, ventilated clutch makes for improved heat dissipation.
Activating the M Dynamic Mode and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) gives your sports ambitions free rein. Drive slip for both longitudinal and transverse dynamics increases at all speed levels because DSC does not instantly intervene in the automobile's motion. This does not impact on safety, however: it is just a means to increase driving pleasure. Consistent lightweight design for optimum longitudinal and lateral dynamics. This includes high-strength bumpers, the complete front section, the CFRP roof, and the entire drivetrain. And the new V8 engine, too, weighs an amazing 15 kg less than the previous six-cylinder unit. Mass has been placed as close to the centre of gravity as possible, while maintaining the ideal 50/50 front-rear weight distribution. The chassis has also been stiffened to provide increased lightness and stability.
The seats in the 2013 BMW M3 Coupé combine the best in comfort and sportiness. This has been achieved by using a special cushioning material that's exclusive to M Sport seats. Soft leather, an optimised ergonomic design and prominent side bolsters also contribute to the high level of comfort. The electric seat settings for the seat back angle, seat height, and lateral position are saved in the memory function to ensure a glove-like fit in any driving situation. And for additional stability when cornering, the width of the backrest can also be individually adjusted (optional).
