2013 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Review

The 2013 Honda CR-Z isn’t just a means to get from point A to point B. This is a Honda CR Z designed to create an emotional bond with its driver. And its interior is a place you’ll want to return to over and over again. From hairpin turns to highway on-ramps, the bolstered silver mesh sport seats are not only stylish but, more important, help keep you firmly in place. The thick, leather wrapped 3 spoke steering wheel (EX) adds to the performance attitude of the interior. The combination of the tilt and telescopic steering column with the seat-height adjustment means you will undoubtedly find the perfect driving position. The expandable cargo area has up to 25.1 cubic feet of stowage. The rear cargo console behind the front seats provides a quick place to store things like a computer case. Folding the console hides these items while also creating a flat floor for transporting larger objects.

A low center of gravity, wide tread and a compact overall height contribute to the 2013 Honda CR-Z’s excellent handling. These virtues, together with specially tuned independent front and torsion-beam rear suspension, combine for an invigorating blend of agility, stability and ride quality. The compact and simple Honda Integrated Motor Assist IMA system adds power and efficiency with an electric motor. The Honda CR-Z’s 1.5-liter, 16-valve i-VTEC 4-cylinder gasoline engine combines with an electric motor to provide 122 horsepower and 128 lb-ft of torque6 (123 lb-ft CVT). Perfect for driving in the city, the IMA’s instantaneous torque at low rpm means quick off-the-line acceleration.

The available Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) allows you to drive the 2013 Honda CR-Z more like a conventional automatic but also offers another pulse-quickening way to change gears. Using the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel, the driver can shift through seven simulated gear ratios at will. The world’s first 6-speed production hybrid, Honda CR-Z’s sporting credentials include a 6-speed manual transmission a claim true of very few sport coupes, much less hybrids.  t 37 combined mpg (35 city/39 highway), the CVT-equipped Honda CR-Z is one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road today. Not far behind is the manual- transmission model, which gets an EPA-rated 31 city/37 highway/34 combined mpg. Equally impressive is the AT-PZEV emissions rating in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) Zero-Emission Vehicle regulations. The battery pack, located down low behind the seats for an optimal center of gravity, supplies energy to the IMA system and stores recaptured energy from regenerative braking.

Honda is committed to providing safety for everyone that means crash protection not only for our own drivers and passengers, but also for the occupants of other vehicles, and injury mitigation for pedestrians. We are dedicated to identifying and implementing advanced designs and features that help enhance the safety of vehicles on the road. The side curtain airbag module is positioned along the side of the headliner. In the event of a sufficient side impact, this system
will activate to help provide protection for all occupants. Both seats include active head restraints. During a rear impact, the head restraint moves forward and upward, decreasing the distance to the occupant’s head and helping reduce the likelihood of neck injuries.

The 2013 Honda CR-Z is equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS) for impressive stopping power. The Brake Assist feature helps apply full braking in some emergency situations, and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) can distribute brake force among the four wheels based on how much load each wheel is bearing. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA )* helps sense oversteer or understeer in an emergency situation, and then adjusts brake pressure at each wheel and/or reduces engine power to help restore driver control. Both the driver and passenger are protected by advanced front airbags that incorporate dual-stage, multiple-threshold technology. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates, depending on crash severity, seat-belt usage and/or other factors. In the event of a moderate-to-severe side impact, the side airbag inflates to help protect the driver’s or front passenger’s upper body.

The interior design draws inspiration from numerous sources. The instrument panel and gauges borrow cues from fighter jets and touch-screen mobile devices. There’s even a dash of 3-D. The result is simultaneously cutting yet classically simple. Stylish, lightweight and durable, the textured-aluminum pedals found on EX models are optimally positioned for heel/toe down shifting. How many hybrids can say that? Bluetooth Hands FreeLink on EX models keeps you connected to those who matter most. Answer cell- phone calls without taking your eyes off the road or hands off the wheel. The CR-Z includes a 160-watt audio system with 6 speakers, while EX models kick it up to a whopping 360 watts with 7 speakers, including an 8" subwoofer.

The USB Audio Interface1 can read flash drives loaded with MP3 or Windows Media Audio (WMA) music files. Plug in your compatible MP3 player to listen to your music and keep the device fully charged. The available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System (EX) is renowned for being fast and intuitive. And something you’ll find you just can’t live without. The voice-recognition feature recognizes numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 600 voice commands.
