The Audi S5 was released in coupé form to the public at the same time as the A5. The Audi S5 Sportback was unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, and is expected to go on sale in the spring of 2010 with a MSRP of €57,900. The S5 coupé currently retains a 4.2 litre Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI) V8 engine that produces 354 hp (264 kW), while the S5 Cabriolet and Sportback have a supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI V6 engine producing 330 HP which is shared with the Audi S4 sedan and avant. The Audi S5 coupé will be receiving the supercharged 3.0 litre TFSI V6 in 2011 for the 2012 model year.

The Audi S5, in comparison to the AUDI A5, features a more aggressive fascia (as do most Audi S and RS models), including a string of LED daytime running lights around the bi-Xenon headlamps and a vertically striped chrome grille. At Audi, doing less is something we’re trying to do more of. We’re working to use less fuel, release less CO2 and waste less energy. It’s why we’ve incorporated a number of more efficient technologies into the Audi S6. When a vehicle brakes, the discs convert the kinetic energy into thermal energy, which is wasted as it cannot be used. With a recuperation system, like the one in the Audi A6 Saloon, the kinetic energy is converted into useful electrical energy.

The way it works is simple. While the car is coasting or braking, the alternator voltage is raised above the level of the basic electrical system, which enables the alternator to generate electrical energy and store it temporarily in the battery. When the vehicle accelerates, this energy is used to relieve the load on the alternator, resulting in a fuel saving of up to 3%.
