Centrally fitted exhaust turbochargers in the V of the cylinder banks permit an especially compact engine design and hence a low weight. The combination of systematic lightweight chassis construction and optimised aerodynamics produces unique agility, perfect road-holding and absolutely precise handling.

At higher speeds the engine revs drop due to the eight gear, thus decreasing fuel consumption, which is further reduced in the BMW 640i thanks to the automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop function.
