2013 BMW 6 Series Convertible Evolution Power Review

I like a stream of water that inexorably carves out its own channel, powerful shapes and flowing contours shape the entire body of the 2013 BMW 6 Series Convertible. Sporting proportions, inspired by the elegance of flowing water. Excitement arises on the surface. At the very first sight, the design of the BMW 6 Series Convertible captures the dynamics of the driving experience. The flat, extended car body and the broad rear add power and character. At the same time generous areas disappear in the flow of lively power lines creating an elegant interplay between light and shade. With the roof open, the waistline surrounds the entire passenger compartment, separating it from the outside and lending the interior an exclusive intimacy. When closed, the distinctly extended fin roof continues the contours of the body and, with its elegant coupé roof line impressively emphasises the exclusive charisma of the BMW 6 Series Convertible. Equally charismatic is the focused look of the bi-xenon headlights. The unmistakeable LED rings of the daytime running lights and the accented trim distinguish the front end. Together with the low position of kidney grille with its slight forward lean and the sweep of the bonnet, it clearly illustrates the focus of the BMW 6 Series Convertible: namely, the road.

Classical elegance that sets standards: the fully automatic roof convincingly impresses with its excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. It gives the 2013 BMW 6 Series Convertible a coupĂ©-like silhouette and, in combination with the drop-down rear window ensures effective ventilation of the interior. Available in three colours, the roof folds into the hood enclosure in the boot at the touch of a button to provide even more fresh air. At speeds of up to 40 km/h it opens in only 19 seconds and closes in 24. The optional wind deflector helps to counteract irritating wind noises at high speeds. Quickly mounted behind the front seats, the deflector noticeably reduces air turbulence inside the vehicle, thus creating a pleasant driving sensation. If the wind deflector is not needed it disappears compactly inside the luggage space. Even with the roof closed, you and your passengers will enjoy a pleasant open-air driving experience in the BMW 6 Series Convertible. In the extravagant “California” mode, all five windows are lowered while the roof remains closed. And so you are protected from the sun, without having to miss out on the sensation of the wind.

The 2013 BMW 6 Series Convertible, long distances become sprints. Just a brief press of the accelerator unleashes the power of the V8 petrol engine. In every corner you sense the close contact with the road; with each acceleration you are captivated by the sonorous sound of the eight cylinders. Make travelling your favourite sport: the V8 engine with petrol direct injection and TwinPower Turbo accelerates with an outstanding 300 kW (407 hp) and a maximum torque of 600 Nm from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.0 seconds. As befits its performance, the V8 petrol engine is thrifty using an average of 10.6 to 10.7 l/100 km with combined CO2 emissions of 248 to 249 g/km. The 8-speed Sport automatic transmission Steptronic keeps the engine in the optimum revving range and shifts almost imperceptibly while offering you supreme travelling comfort. Centrally fitted exhaust turbochargers in the V of the cylinder banks permit an especially compact engine design and hence a low weight. The combination of systematic lightweight chassis construction and optimised aerodynamics produces unique agility, perfect road-holding and absolutely precise handling.

The most dynamic and comfortable way to save: the eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic not only ensures incredibly swift changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption. Only the tachometer will reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed sports automatic transmission Steptronic changes gear. The additional gears are finely graduated so that the change from third to fourth gear, for example, takes place with small rev intervals and the transmission process itself is barely perceptible. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength. For more dynamics, more comfort and more efficiency. At higher speeds the engine revs drop due to the eight gear, thus decreasing fuel consumption, which is further reduced in the BMW 640i thanks to the automatic transmission with Auto Start Stop function. The engine switches of when the car stops and starts up again while your foot is leaving the brake pedal.

Self assured power build-up, silky smooth, cultivated performance: the strengths of the BMW straight six-cylinder are legendary. With each new generation, BMW has continued to refine the engine while at the same increasing its dynamics and efficiency. The BMW 640i  represents another highlight in this success story. 235 kW (320 hp) and 450 newton metres, only 7.8 to 7.9 l/100 km, 181 to 185 g CO2/km and acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. Revolutionary technologies and innovative fine tuning interact to complement and stimulate each other in the BMW TwinPower Turbo of the BMW 640i. TwinScroll turbocharger and Valvetronic bring a breath of fresh air into the combustion chamber, where petrol direct injection generates clouds of a precisely adjusted petrol-air mixture within milliseconds while the double-Vanos optimally adapt the engine performance across the speed range. The result is maximum efficiency particularly when full power is not required, maximum power over a broad band of revs and a direct response at all times.
